We saw Young Frankenstein on Wednesday night. It was rather surreal, going to the theater in the midst of this stagehands strike. We enjoyed the show very, very much. Those of you who are looking to see a stage production of the movie, you’ll be very pleased. If you are looking for award-winning, aesthetic theater, you’ll be disappointed.
Andrea Martin was wonderful. She was Frau Blucher, she just didn’t recreate the inimitable role for which we know Cloris Leachman. My favorite moment: As she bids Froderick a good night, she offers him a brandy, then warm milk, then “Ovaltine, perhaps?” Her added (or was it ad libbed?) “I could run out for a grande soy macchiato . . . ” got a great laugh.
We were very excited to see Meghan Mullaly as well — and she delivered. The woman has an amazing voice. Her musical numbers “Don’t Touch Me” and “Deep Love” were dynamic and hilarious.
Technically, the show does some amazing things. Our favorite moment was the hayride with Inga. The giant video screen upstage came alive and it made it seem like the hay cart was rolling through the forest — a great effect.
But our greatest surprise that evening had to do with ticket prices. I paid $125 per seat for two Row A Dress Circle seats, purchased 5 days before the show. The two couples on either side of us paid $275 per seat, purchased before previews began! What gives? Is there any sense to that?
