Two wonderful concerts are just around the corner. If you live in the area, I hope you will be able to join us.
First, tomorrow evening, my wonderful Westchester Symphonic Winds celebrate their 25th Anniversary with a not-to-be-missed Gala Concert. Featured are guest conductors Mallory Thompson and Tom McCauley and guest soloists Lois Hicks-Wozniak, alto saxophone, and Barbara Ciannella, piano. Barbara will be playing the iconic Rhapsody in Blue, and the program also features Persichetti’s powerful Symphony for Band, plus works by John Philip Sousa, Ron Lo Presti, Dmitri Shostakovich, and will end with Vasily Kalinnikov’s monumental Finale from Symphony No. 1, with 22 antiphonal brass poised in the balcony to bring the concert to a dramatic close. All this happens at Tarrytown Music Hall, 13 Main Street, Tarrytown, NY at 8:00 pm tomorrow, Saturday, May 18. You can still purchase tickets at the door, or on the web at www.tarrytownmusichall.org.
My tenure at NVOT will come to a close on Tuesday, June 11 at 7:30 pm. My final Awards Concert will recognize the achievements of this year’s seniors, but will also give me a chance to say thank you and farewell to the place I have called home for 31 years. For this concert, I will combine all of my current band students in Concert Band and Wind Symphony to perform Yorkshire Ballad by James Barnes and my favorite march, The Gallant Seventh, by John Philip Sousa. Then 16 NVOT alumni and colleagues will join and double the size of my current String Ensemble for Lauriden’s passionate O Magnum Mysterium and Bach’s joyful Brandenburg Concerto No. 3. Finally, over 60 alumni and colleagues will join the current Wind Symphony for a massed ensemble of 130 players, to close the concert with the Kalinnikov Finale. It will be a memorable event.
If you are currently active as a string or wind player, and would still like to register to play in one of the massed ensembles, you can still register for the Alumni/Colleague String Orchestra or the Alumni/Colleague Symphonic Band by following these links.
Finally, the Music Parents are planning a wonderful retirement dinner for me on Monday, June 3. You can still register for the dinner. I would be honored if you’d like to attend.
I hope to see and greet many of you in the next weeks at this amazing point in my life.
