Q: “How do you get to Carnegie Hall?”
A: “Practice, practice, practice!” In my case, I guess that’s true — but it’s a lot more involved than that!
I’ve been so fortunate over the past 4+ decades to work with inspired teachers, amazing colleagues, and dedicated players. This has been especially so over the past 15 years, as the conductor and music director of the Westchester Symphonic Winds. This amazing adult wind ensemble has performed at Lincoln Center, at one state and two national conventions, and has had a recurring annual performance at the Caramoor Festival in Katonah, New York since 2014.
And now, we’ve been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall, as part of the 2023 World Projects Sounds of Summer Festival. For many players in the group, this is a bucket list opportunity. This will be the first time conducting my own ensemble on this iconic and fabled stage.
Our performance is on Tuesday, June 13 at 8:00 pm in the Isaac Stern Auditorium in Carnegie Hall. The program includes:
- Eternal Memoir: Saga of the Lucky Dragon, by Hirokazu Fukushima
- Shenandoah, by Omar Thomas
- La Cage aux Folles – a new overture for concert band, by Jerry Herman, arranged by Barton Green
- Desert Sage, by Michael Markowski (commissioned by the Westchester Symphonic Winds)
If you live in the New York area (or might plan a trip) I hope you’ll join us. Tickets are a modest $40 (plus $9 box office fees) and are available directly from our Carnegie Hall ticketing page. (We’ve just been added to this performance date, so the webpage may not include our ensemble name yet, but trust that this is the correct ticketing page for June 13 at 8:00 pm.)
